Geology

The main complex in Machico is the Intermediate Volcanic Complex, which occupies the central body of the county. This complex is crossed by the Machico - Seixal fault as well as other smaller faults that run parallel to it.

It can then be inferred that, in Machico, the dominant Complex is also the one that is most submitted to greater structural control.

The dikes studied present an E-W direction, being very evident in the region of Ponta de São Lourenço.

Geological Map of Madeira, Sheet B (Brum et al, 2012, adapted)

Machico has a varied landscape due to the existence of weather resistant flows that originated some of the highest peaks. These contrast with the deep V-shaped valleys where it is possible to observe rolled blocks of various dimensions, which demonstrate the high capacity during torrential periods. In the valley of Machico, highly weathered flows predominate, alternating with levels of pyroclasts that contribute to the valley’s U-shape. Due to its permeability, these formations favour groundwater extraction in the county, where the aquifer has good productivity but is very localized.

It should also be noted that Machico is the most geodiverse municipality of the autonomous region and is managed in partnership between SRARN (Secretaria Regional do Ambiente e Recursos Naturais) and the Municipal Project- Ecos Machico, which in its municipal network of Ecosites, discloses the many spaces of natural and scenic value as well like the local fauna and flora.
