In addition to the fantastic views over the village of Caniçal, this trail lets you experience a bit of history taking you along the old route used by the locals before the existence of roads and tunnels.
The wide horizon takes you into seemingly close proximity to the neighbouring Deserta Islands.
Vereda da Ribeira do Natal is a tranquil and physically undemanding route. The track starts in an auspicious way, in one of the most emblematic places in Machico. Pico do Facho is a great viewpoint from which you can observe the entire valley and the way the city occupies the area.
The descent to Caniçal is straightforward and clear and is still used by local families to get to the neighbouring parish.
The path ends at ER 109, just after a small drystone bridge that crosses a stream. Prolong your trek by heading down towards Praia da Ribeira do Natal. There you will find a promenade that takes you on a pleasant 700 metre seafront walk to the Whale Museum.
This is a round trip, however if you decide not to go back the same way, it is recommended you hire the services of a local transport company to get back to your point of origin. Search the business directory and lookup companies that provide these services.
